The Lions returned to the winners circle against the Frankfurt Redbacks in Round 6 of the ALFG season in Frankfurt. The Redbacks were a bit short of players and the game was played 12 vs 12 which played into the Lions hands with lots of space and lots of run.
1st Quarter – The Lions came out a bit slow not pushing to contests and giving the Redbacks a chance to get the ball. After the first 10 minutes though the Lions found their game and ended up on top – 3 goals to 1 goal
2nd Quarter – The quarter was a well fought contest with the Redbacks giving all they had to try and stay with the Lions on their home ground but the Lions were too strong in too many positions. The Lions running game started to come into play and the Redbacks struggled to keep up. 4 goals to 1 goal
3rd Quarter – For the premiership quarter the Lions were awake and on their game. The running game cut the Redbacks to shreds and the lake of numbers by the Redbacks started to pay their toll as the Lions fitness started to take control of the game. 6 goals to 0
4th Quarter – The Lions finished of the game in style not letting the Redbacks score in the second half. Apart from some missed opportunities in front of goal it was a great end to a great game.
The Final score: Rheinland Lions 17.22.124 def Frankfurt Redbacks 2.5.17
After the disappointment of the game in Berlin it was great to see the Lions back into the form needed to contest for this years Premiership. With 4 games to go nothing is decided and the Lions will have to continue to lift coming into September. With a lot of new recruits and the return of a lot of injured players the fight for a spot in the Lions team is getting tough.
Player review:
Maxie – In his first game as Captain this year, Maxie was on fire. His passion for the ball in the middle, his run around the field and voice on ground could only be described as brilliant. Made a lot of options around the ground and pushing into the forward line where he kicked 2 goals. A+ with Stars
Ant– The coach continued his good form in the forward line. Was making space all day and took marks all over the place. Frankfurt could not defend him. Was a bit inaccurate in front of goal, but still had over 12 shots bagging 6 goals. Fantastic
Philipp– In his first game for the Lions did a great job and a player of the future if he sticks with AFL. Strong, fast and willing to learn and not afraid to mix it with the Redbacks in his first game. Great Stuff
Bakes– Had another blinder and is getting better and better with each game. His delivery of the football outstanding and his attack on the ball brilliant. Made options all over the ground and was always free. Ended up a lot in the forward line where he kicked 4 great goals. Brilliant
Neal– Moved into the middle again against the Redbacks and dominated in the centre. Hard at the ball and made great options all over the ground. Pushed down to the forward line where he is always dangerous and kicked 2 great goals. Fantastic
Craig – A new recruit and playing his first game for the Lions showed he will be another big asset to the team this year. Great options and knows where the football is. With more training and more fitness watch out. Great stuff.
Moman– A true fighter and a great game. On the lead unstoppable and passion for the ball something to be admired. Made opportunities when there were none there and ended up kicking 2 great goals. Great stuff.
Viktor– Really starting to find his feet in Lions team due to hard training. Hard at the ball and lots of run. Making more options with every game he plays. Great stuff.
Waldi– Playing his first game for the Lions did a great job. Made options and wanted the ball every time it was near him. Once he gets his marking skills fined tuned will be a big asset. Great stuff
Rolli – Doesn’t know the word easy ball. Hard at the ball, providing options and full of run. Continued his outstanding year with another great game. Really starting to read the game more and more which his making him a brilliant footballer. Fantastic.
Kai– The big man was moved to the back line and did a great job. Strong in the air and strong at the ball. Didn’t get to see too much of the ball due to the Lions dominance but was always there when needed. Great stuff.
Thom – Had a great game although he didn’t see the ball much in the back line. Always hard at the ball and always there when needed. Will be a big loss to the Lions when he leaves for Australia after the next game. Hope he joins a team in Oz. Great stuff
Che – Is stamping his spot in the Lions side this year. Trains hard and plays hard. Found his spot in the back line where he is becoming unstoppable. Strong at the ball and strong hands, another great game. Great stuff.
Mick – Poor Mick had to ruck again, but when he does such a fantastic job it is hard to move him. Again was outstanding in the middle and with his run around the ground makes it almost impossible for the other team to keep up with him. Brilliant
Menschy– Picked up a nasty hamstring injury in Berlin but still made the trip to Frankfurt showing his passion for football. Came on in the last quarter in the Ruck and didn’t lose a tap out. Made options all around the ground. Great.
Andi– Run Run Run, he never stops which makes him a lethal player for the Lions. Strong hands and always an option around the ground. What would happen with more training? Got on the scoreboard with a great goal. Great stuff
Marti– Returning to the Lions after 3 months off with a broken wrist, made an immediate impact on the game with good options and a great mark. Had some chances to kick some goals but was a bit unlucky. Great return
Luke– The Captain still recovering from a broken nose ended up Umpiring the game and did a great job. Thanks for making the trip and putting up your hand to Umpire. Great stuff.
