Lions lose tough game vs Munich in Round 9

In round 9 of the ALFG season the Lions made the 600km trip down south to take on the arch rivals the Munich Kangaroos it what turned out to be another classic encounter.  Both teams still fighting for a spot in this years ALFG Grand Final.

First quarter: The Lions came ready to play and from the first minute both teams knew it was going to be a hard day at the office.  Within the first 2 minutes the Lions were hit hard when Matty Oser went down hard and broke his collar bone, a big loss.  All Lions wish Matty a speedy recovery.  The game was delayed 30minutes while an ambulance transported Matty to the hospital.  When the game started again both teams we not effected by the delay and the fight for the ball was vigorous.  The Lions defence stood tall.  Goals were not easy to come by and a hard fought effort by Josh got the first goal on the board.  Lions 1.3.9 to Munich 0.0.0

Second quarter:  Running into the wind, the Lions came out great at the start of the second quarter.  The determination, the fight for the ball was there and Munich couldn’t manage to use their advantage with the wind.  The hard work paid off when Dirka kicked a great goal to give the Lions the upper hand.  Shortly after the goal, Big Al got a bad knock to his knee and the Ruckman was out for the rest of the game.  Instead of keeping up the intensity the Lions appeared to relax and take their foot off the accelerator and it cost them dearly.  The Kangaroos took advantage of their chance and punished the Lions being harder at the footy and with more run.  The Kangaroos taking control of the last 10 minutes and banging through 3 goals in a low scoring match.  Lions 1.1.7 to Munich 3.3.21

Third quarter: After the long break and an ear full from Coach Ant, the Lion came out in the 3rd quarter switched on and ready to play.  The fight was back, the tackles and run were there and the results came.  Rollie was moved into the middle and Mick into the Ruck and both players lifted the Lions with great performances.  A great goal from the sideline from Neal followed up by another hard fought goal by Marti giving the Lions the lead again.  The Lions defence again standing strong led by Captain Luke McBride.  The Lions getting a 9 point lead but would it be enough? Lions 2.3.15 to Munich 0.1.1

Fourth quarter: The 2 goal wind for Munich was going to make it hard for the Lions in the last quarter.  The game was as tight as ever with both teams moving the ball from one end to the other but neither getting the upper hand.  Munich managed to get a goal mid way through the quarter to bring them within a kick.  And so it was, 5 minutes before the end a goal to Munich put the Kangaroos ahead.  The fight in the last minutes was great with both teams running on empty tanks.  The Lions had some chance to snatch the victory but couldn’t capitalize on their chances. Lions 0.3.3 to Munich 2.4.16

The final score in another thrilling game saw the Lions defeated by the Kangaroos by 4 points in a tough battle. Score 4.10.34 to 5.8.38

It was a great team effort by the Lions with all players giving their all unfortunately inaccuracy and a lapse in concentration cost them the game.

The Lions take on Berlin in Round 10 on the 10th September under the TV Tower in Cologne which will determine what teams make the 2011 AFLG Grand Final.  The Lions must win to stay in race and will definitely be ready to give the Croc’s a hard game.
