Lions 2011 AFLG Premiers
The Lions travelled to Stuttgart to play Berlin in the 2011 AFLG Grand Final. A huge Lions group of players and supporters making the trip. On arrival the weather was perfect and the Lions were greeted with a bit of a shock when they saw the ground, grass mown out of a glider field. But it was the same for both sides so the focus returned to winning the “BIG” game.
First quarter: The Lions came out a little slow, maybe because of the 4 hour trip or maybe a bit nervous, but still not performing at their best. After 10 minutes though the players lifted and the game was on. The first quarter was a very hard fought contest, both teams trying to get an early up hand. One goal to the Lions and one goal to the crocs saw the game poised for a close encounter.
Second quarter: Coach Ant ripped into the players at quarter time, letting them know this was Grand Final day and the effort had to lift. The players responding with an awesome quarter of football. The intensity needed to win was there, the run was back, the centre players were getting the ball, defence was strong and the forwards were lethal. 5 goals to 0 giving the Lions a good lead going into the long break.
Third quarter: Kicking up the hill the Lions knew that they had to work hard to keep the great lead they had achieved in the 2nd quarter. And work hard they did, the intensity in the “Premiership” quarter was great. The attack on the football, the run, the talk was great to watch as the Lions again kept the croc’s goalless and also managed to kick 2 to give them a 39 point lead going into the final quarter.
Fourth quarter: The lead was big and most teams would have probably dropped down a gear and enjoyed the almost certain win, but the Lions of 2011 showed no mercy and showed they wanted to finish the great season with a great final quarter. Berlin were not able to keep up and the fitness started playing into the Lions hands as they ran the croc’s into the ground. The Lions banging on 3 goals to the crocs 1 in the last quarter.
The final score saw the Rheinland Lions defeating the Croc’s 11.9.75 to 2.12.24 to become 2011 AFLG “PREMIERS”.
It was a great season for the Lions and their goal of winning the premiership was reached. Thank you to all the Lions players and supporters. The Lions will take a short break from training before getting back on the track in preparation for the 2012 season with the goal of winning back to back premierships.
Player review:
2011 Rheinland Players– You can not win a Grand Final as individuals but as a Team. Every player on the Rheinland Lions players list performed in 2011 and the result was a well earned Premiership. The hard work at training and game day performances really paid off. A special mention goes to Josh (Best on Ground), Maxie, Michi, Roland and Chrissy O with outstanding games. Goal Scorers: Josh 3, Ant 3, Pete 2, Marcie, 1, Dave 1, Andi 1
A big Roar to the Rheinland Captain Luke McBride and Vice Captain Max Kolleck for leading the Lions both on the training track and on the playing field the whole year.
To Dave Nolan for assisting Ant on the training track all year with great training drills that really paid off on game days and kept all players on their toes at training..
Ant Garland coach of the Lions, gave everything he had and showed the players what you can achieve with hard work and when you play as a Team.
Bring on 2012!!
ROOOAAAAAARRRRRRR!!
