Lions qualify for GF in Round 10 vs Berlin
In round 10 of the ALFG season the Lions took on the Berlin Crocodiles under the TV Tower in Ehrenfeld. It was a huge game, 1st vs 2nd on the ALFG ladder and the Lions had to win to have a chance of making the 2011 ALFG Grand Final.
First quarter: The Lions came out hard and were ready to play. In the first minute the Lions rover (Bakes) unfortunately got a very serious injury breaking his leg and had to be transport to Hospital. After a 30 minute delay the game continued. The Lions appeared to have lifted another notch and dominated the Croc’s in all areas of the field. The centre players were awesome, the strong Lions defence kept Berlin scoreless and the forwards worked hard kicking 3 goals.
Second quarter: The game continued as in the first quarter as the Lions dominated play all over the ground. The centre players were hard at the ball and full of run, the defence was dominating and the forwards were making a lot of options. A couple of minor injuries at the end of the quarter and a change up in the line up caused a slight lapse and Berlin managed to get their first goal but 5 goals to the Lions gave them a 49 point lead going into the second half.
Third quarter: With a big lead at the long break you might have thought the Lions would relax but they showed no mercy in the 3rd quarter continuing to dominate the game. Berlin came out with lifted spirits but they were not able to stop the Lions steam train as the Lions kept up the pressure, kept running and packed on the points. The Lions kicked another 5 goals to the Crocs 1 goal.
Fourth quarter: Although the game was basically over coach Ant did not want the Lions to relax. All players answered by playing another outstanding quarter of football. The intensity was as high as in the first quarter, the centre players were still running like there was no tomorrow, the defence wanted to keep the Crocs score to a minimum and the forwards were after more goals. The Lions ended up kicking another 3 goals to the Crocs 1 goal.
The final score in an awesome game saw the Lions defeating the Croc’s 16.12.108 to 3.3.21.
With the win the Lions not only qualified for the 2011 AFLG Grand Final but also secured top spot on the 2011 AFLG ladder and the Minor Premiership.
The Lions will again face Berlin on the 24th September in Stuttgart in the Grand Final. The Lions know the win against Berlin was good but the Croc’s will be more focused in the Final. Training will be hard over the next 2 weeks as the Lions prepare to get back the Stone they lost to Munich last year.
Player review:
Bakes – The little terrier came out fired up and was into every pack from the get go. This would be the end of the day though for him after only a minute when in a fair collision he got a horrific injury, breaking his leg and dislocated his ankle. All the Lions wish Bakes a speedy recover.
Lukey – Another captains game, led by example from the backline and repelled all the Berlin attacks. Lots of great marks and penetrating kicks forward. Managed to make his way up forward to kick a great goal. Great stuff.
Maxie – Another brilliant game. Never stops running, always wants the ball and gets lots of it. Loves to get the hard ball and dominated in the centre. He is lethal running into the forward line where he kicked another great goal. Fantastic
Gero – Awesome in defence - The rock of Gibraltar. Ran hard and nothing got passed him. Stopped countless Berlin attacks with strong spoils and with great attack at the football. Fantastic
Ant – The coach led the Lions by example, although he couldn’t get a clear mark, he still provided lots of run, was real hard at the football and made lots of tackles. Kicked a great goal. Great Stuff
Michi – In the middle just dominated the Berlin players all day. His ability to move the ball in tight spaces is great to watch. Made so many tackles we lost count. Great stuff
Marcie – Always gives his all for the Lions, runs all day on the wing and provides a great option when going forward out of defence. Gets into all the packs and gets the ball to runners all day. Super
Josh – Another great game by the CHF. Took strong marks, was making options all day and always hard at the ball. Always dangerous in front of goal and got on the scoreboard with 1. Great stuff
Viktor – Runs more than Forrest Gump. Improving with every game, reading the play better and better and always hard at the football. Keep it up. Great stuff
