AFLG 2014: Round 3 - Lions win against the Stuttgart Emus
A sunny Saturday the 24th of May set the scene for the Lions hosting the Stuttgart Emus at the true Rheinland home ground under Colonius Tower. After a solid effort in preparing the ground for battle, a strong crowd of supporters packed the sidelines to get behind a 20 strong Lion lineup. Unfortunately the Emus couldn't quite bring the full flock, so in order to make a game of it we passed a couple of the boys over to help out. With a final on-ground lineup of 12 on 12, and the Lions with an overflowing bench compared to a bare Emu pine, we made sure we didn't go in too complacent at the first bounce, as we new the Emus would be trying to capitalise as much as possible early in the piece with fresh legs.

The first quarter saw us kicking with a strong breeze behind us, and despite coming out ahead at the end of the term, we struggled to find our true rhythm and missed a lot of easy goal opportunities. The second quarter told a similar story to the first, with a clear upper hand in possessions and shots on goal going to the Lions, but a scoreboard that wasn't quite proving it. Things picked up in the third, with the boys going the extra mile in the contest and the benefits clearly showing with some clean passages of play resulting in some much needed conversions. Confidence from the Lions was showing in the final term, with a few neat strings of play resulting in some well earned goals and a comfortable 30 point victory. But with nearly double the behinds as goals, it's clear that goal kicking will be on top of the drill list at training as we prepare to make the journey east to face Berlin in the next round. Overall, a solid team performance from the Lions made us the better team on the day.
