Lions win opening matches on the road

The Rheinland Lions have come away from Round 1 with a perfect record, with our Kings and Queens winning on the Road.

On the menu for the women were the Southern Giants and the Munich Kangaroos, two solid opponents, but ones we were ready to face.

First up were the Southern Giants, who, having just beaten the Munich Kangaroos, were full of optimism.

It was a close affair with the ball being highly contested for most of the first half. That is until, our lord and saviour Lisa Wilson came onto the pitch to score two goals and assist a third. The Rheinland Lions came away with the first win of the day.

Next up were the Munich Kangaroos, a team with pace and endurance.

Once again, the match was a seesaw, swinging from side to side with both teams determined to get the win. The Lions put up an incredible, gutsy performance in the last few minutes to protect their slim advantage to once again come away with the win and secure a clean sweep on the day.

The lads travelled to Frankfurt to play against the combined Frankfurt-Dresden team and the Heidelberg Knights.

In typical April fashion, the weather decided to do the unexpected and produce steamy 23 degrees and sunny conditions.

The Lions took to the field against the Heidelberg Knights first and the Rheinland boys were seemingly scoring at will.

Debutant Patrick, who was nursing a light injury, led hard from the goal square and kicked his first major early on. Nick also registered a new milestone, giving away six free kicks (including a 25m penalty), impressive stats, even for him. In the end Cologne stormed home with a margin of 82 points.

The final match of the day saw the "Red Wolves" return with fresh legs, leading the Lions for the majority of the first half.

Despite a slow start, Rheinland managed to claw back and hold a slim lead at half-time, running away with a 39-point win. 🙌🏼
